Raft cruise sheds light on Jamaica’s natural beauty

27 10 2007

dunnsriver.jpgIn a land of jungle and caves washed by the Caribbean sea along Jamaica’s northern coast, are the resorts for which this country is justly famous. They include Half Moon in Montego Bay, the Grand Lido in Negril and Breezes, a short drive from Ocho Rios — all are pockets of heaven on a paradise shore.

As tempting as it was to laze on the beach in the shade of almond trees and sea grapes, our group of seven travellers chose to step beyond the luxury of the resorts to explore the natural beauty of one of the Caribbean’s most fascinating islands.

Honeymooning Jamaica Style

grandlido1.jpgThe third largest island in the Caribbean offers white sand beaches and tropical mountains. Swim with dolphins, dance to reggae in the land of Bob Marley, watch local artists at work or have a massage in a private cabana on the beach.

Negril boasts a seven-mile beach lined with resorts. Charles and Melissa Brickey got married on the beach with close friends and family in attendance, then honeymooned for nine days at the Grand Lido Negril, and loved every minute of it.

“The wedding planner at the Grand Lido made everything so easy,” said Charles. “And since the resort was all-inclusive, once we got there we didn’t have to think about another thing.” The Brickeys felt that many of the resorts were cramped together along the long beach, but not the Lido. “Our resort seemed to have the longest stretch of beach,” says Melissa. “It wasn’t crowded like some of the others, even though we were there in December.”

Trip Report: Caliente Caribe - Dominican Republic

19 10 2007

eden_bay_resort_41.jpgReport by Alan & Sheila

This was our first trip to Eden Bay. The Website doesn’t do it justice! It was absolutely gorgeous. We were there the first week of this month, which happened to be the owners’ meeting. We met about 13 couples of owners and 5 single owners. Everyone was so wonderful, welcomed us and asked us to join them at meals, etc. We also met the manager and his wife. Also nice people.

We rented a beachfront villa and it was wonderful, right by the outside bar, pools and jacuzzi. Lots of room inside and was just remodeled. We visited several other units that were also remodeled (the hotel buildings and upper beachfront units). All very well done.

When online bookings go bad…

11 10 2007

No wonder people still are turning to travel agents to book their trips. When things go wrong for travelers, they expect someone to help them.

It’s frustrating to wade through electronic phone prompts to reach an airline reservation agent or customer service at an online travel agency.

Firms such as Expedia, Orbitz, Travelocity, Quikbook and Hotels.com (and, to a lesser degree, Priceline), like the airlines, offer the option of talking to a representative. (With Priceline, the call policy only applies to help booking a hotel room, cruise or tour package.)
