How do I save my expiring frequent-flier miles?

23 12 2007

Q: My frequent-flier accounts have been inactive for too long, and my miles are going to go down the drain. What’s an inexpensive last-minute save?

A: Inactivity periods can creep up on frequent-flier members, especially since some major airlines have been reducing the amount of time fliers’ accounts can rest idle — no miles earned or redeemed — before wiping clean program members’ accounts.

American Airlines’ 36-month inactivity period switched to an 18-month limit on December 15, United Airlines will make the same switch on December 31 and Alaska Airlines will cut its inactivity period from three years to two years starting April 1, 2008.

Other airlines’ inactivity periods range from JetBlue Airways’ one-year expiration date to Continental Airlines’ indefinite commitment.

But saving miles is easy — no need to rely on travel to earn miles. A program member can shop, eat out, take a survey, watch an online ad, donate miles to charity or order magazine subscriptions to add mileage to an account in small increments, keeping it alive.

Get passport, enjoy gift of easier travel in ‘08

14 12 2007

PassportChris Richard is no elf — international protocol is more his thing — but he has a holiday gift suggestion.

“Get everyone in your family a passport,” said Richard, deputy director of public affairs with the U.S. Department of State. “What a great Christmas present.”

Getting a passport now will make travel in 2008 easier, even if you don’t plan travel any more exotic than a Caribbean cruise.

Starting Jan. 31, you will be required to present proof of citizenship, such as an original birth certificate, and government-issued photo identification, such as a driver’s license, when coming back into the United States by sea or by land from Mexico and Canada.

Presenting a passport, good for all international travel, is an easier alternative, Richard said.

When everyone else is dashing through the malls or trimming the tree would be a great time to apply for a passport.

Topless sunbathing in Pittsfield?

5 12 2007

Topless SunbathingA city woman filed a petition with the City Council on Monday requesting that a portion of Burbank Park’s frontage on Onota Lake be designated as an area that would allow women to sunbathe sans bathing-suit tops.

The petition, filed by Katherine Gundelfinger of Lakewood Drive, also asks the city to restrict the right of any sex to walk shirtless in downtown Pittsfield. That portion of her proposal is geared toward males, Gundelfinger said yesterday.

A Pittsfield native, the 36-year-old portrait and landscape artist is not alone in her beliefs. Along with her petition, Gundelfinger has submitted a second petition containing the names of 50 city residents who back her proposal for top-free sunbathing on Onota Lake. She created her petition on June 21 and began collecting names in July.

Are Nudists Healthier Because of Sunlight Exposure?

3 12 2007

Heal Yourself With Sunlight (Part 1 of Timeless Secrets of Health and Rejuvenation)

Getting some sunThe time when one’s immediate natural impulse on the first sunny spring day was to get outside and enjoy it is long gone. Only the very courageous or “careless” who defy the grim warnings from medical mandarins and cancer specialists, wholeheartedly endorsed by the sunscreen industry, dare to venture forth into the “dangerous” sun. Unless they are covered head to toe with sun protection factor (SPF) 60, they gamble with their lives, or so they are made to believe, by those who serve their own vested interests. Fortunately, this view is beginning to crumble in the blatant absence of scientific proof that sunlight causes disease. What is being discovered instead is that lack of sun exposure is one of the greatest risk factors for disease. Very few people know that not getting enough sun kills 50,000 people from cancer deaths every year in the US alone. As shown later, these are deaths that are easily preventable through the Vitamin D produced by the body in response to regular sun exposure.
