Say hello to tan lines — San Onofre’s nude beach is about to be busted

31 05 2008

Clothing-optional for decades, the nude beach at San Onofre is about to get a visit from the (fully-dressed, we’re betting) law. The O.C. Register has the skinny:

Trail 6 is a secluded area abutting Camp Pendleton property where beachgoers can let it all hang out – literally. The 1,000-foot beach, one of few “clothing-optional” beaches – with a lax approach to nudity, has been a safe haven for “naturists” for decades.

That might change in the next month, as the state sets out to crack down on nudity at the beach, in a move that has some longtime locals fuming and worrying about where they’ll go. State Parks will start an educational period Sunday, warning beachgoers of the change, and start citing July 1, officials said.

For some gardeners, naked is the way to go

30 05 2008

From Wire Reports Jessica Damiano, Newsday MELVILLE, N.Y. – Whoa! I had no idea nude gardening was such a popular pastime. I must have been living under a rock all this time. Fully clothed, of course.

I can’t link to some of the sites that have been brought to my attention because of the photos on those pages. Though not provocative in any way, for the most part, they do depict gardeners in what many would consider vulnerable states.

The Naked Gardening Association contends, “Second only to swimming, gardening is at the top of the list of family-friendly activities people are most ready to consider doing nude.” Family friendly?

A blog by Terra Cotta Inn (a clothing-optional resort) contends that Shakira “loves nude gardening.” And a British site reports on a New Jersey man’s “bold commitment to inappropriate nakedness” when he supposedly was arrested in September after “a family spotted him having a shower in his front garden.”

German Nudist Flight Scrapped

25 05 2008

A German travel company said it has decided to cancel a special nude charter flight that had been scheduled for this summer to a popular Baltic Sea destination despite being fully booked.

The July 5 flight to the popular Baltic Sea resort of Usedom was due to be the first of many and was aimed at East Germans nostalgic for the naturism that was authorised and extremely popular under communist rule.

But OssiUrlaub.de, the firm organising the service to a picturesque Baltic Sea island, said it has had second thoughts after “moral objections” in the media and from visitors to its Internet portal, a spokesman said.

The 50 people with tickets would have boarded the flight in the eastern city of Erfurt fully clothed, but once on the plane would have been free to undress and enjoy the rest of the journey without a stitch on.

They will now receive a full refund as well as a voucher for other products offered by the company, whose core business caters to holidaymakers who keep their clothes on, it stressed.

The travel agency created a stir in the media earlier this year with its plans for the first nudist charter flight to the Baltic Sea.

“In the former East Germany, naturist holidays were a much-loved way of spending the best weeks of the year,” the founder of OssiUrlaub.de, Enrico Hess said at the time. “We want to make that freedom possible above the clouds, too.”

Nudism push: go mandatory

25 05 2008

A lobby group has demanded authorities make nudism mandatory at Torquay’s Point Impossible beach.

Australian Nudist Association spokesman Werner Jacob said forcing all beachgoers to strip was the best way of weeding out perverts at Point Impossible.

Replacement of Point Impossible’s clothing-optional status with mandatory nudism would stop “a lot of the hassle” over addressing concerns about deviant behaviour at the beach, he said.

“It would be better if it was nude bathing-only,” Mr Jacob said.

“At the moment it (clothing-optional status) says you don’t have to take your clothes off and you can sit there and perv but if you had to take your clothes off then people would see you.

“I think it would stop a lot of the hassle – at the moment the law is very difficult to define.”

Mr Jacob said a mandatory nude bathing policy would also help boost tourism from nudists.

“Victoria’s losing out on nudist tourism, Torquay’s missing out,” he said.

Mr Jacob suggested a nude bus could ferry passengers to Point Impossible from Torquay accommodation centres to enhance the town’s nudism experience.

No shoes, no shirt, no worries

19 05 2008

When Larry Massa says he likes to travel light, he means it. No need for a jacket and tie at dinner, a pristine set of tennis whites when he hits the court, or even a bathrobe to wear when heading from his hotel room to the pool or the spa.

For when Massa, 74, a retired navy commander and computer science engineer from Virginia Beach, and his wife, Darlene, go on vacation, they do it in the nude. “If you haven’t tried it, there’s no way I can tell you what a fun thing it is, what an added dimension to a vacation it can be” said Massa, who has been taking “clothing-optional” vacations since 2001 and whose most recent trip was to an all-nude resort in Mexico. “I’ll never forget the day,” said Massa, recalling the couple’s first nudist vacation at a Caribbean resort. “The place was full. We went to the far end of the pool and Dar said, ‘I’m going to take my top off.’ I thought I’m not going to wear these stupid swim trunks in the pool. So I jumped in naked. She looked down at me and dropped her bottoms and we never looked back.”

To many, the mention of a nudist resort conjures up images of isolated beach colonies with volleyball courts, hippie-style gatherings in a secluded campground or R.V. parks tucked away in the woods for vacationers who still talk reverently about the Summer of Love.
